Amish Cabinets
The Amish are known for being good builders and woodworkers and cabinet makers are just one more thing they excel in building. Many of the Amish cabinet makers are years behind as so many people are wanting their solid wood construction. A lot of these cabinets are made from hickory and oak while birch and other woods may be common in some shops. The Amish usually offer a plain look with more farm focused aethstetic. We haven't seen many ornate cutouts or detailed engraving come from the Amish shops. You do see beveled edges and long flat lines with a simple stain.

J & E Cabinet in Huntingdon Tennessee
Maybe one of the best examples of a great Amish cabinet shop is J&E Cabinet in Huntingdon Tennessee. This shop runs off a long shaft that is turned by a very large diesel engine that goes the length of the building. The Amish step up or down the gear ratio to get the proper rpm for the machine they are using. The lights are skylights and their bathrooms are cold water gravity fed so they still don't use electricity. Even their airline and dust collectors were using techniques that didn't use electricity. The photo gallery above shows many of the rooms where the Amish men were working on various parts of the cabinets. They said they were years in the wait because there was so much work for them. They used dovetail joints and cleaver was of joining where the glue was able to hold the solid wood construction underweight. Amish Cabinets vs English Cabinets
Maybe verses is not the right terms but there are certain pros and cons to each cabinet maker. We will try to show a few differences between the two types of shops as we have experience with both kinds and have recommended both in the past. Hand Saw = Amish Cabinets and Skill Saw = English Cabinets in the icon in the list below!
Today you can great cabinets to your home with each maker. In some areas the Amish function just like the English shops so there is little difference. The English shops also have pre built cabinets made overseas that can be as good as the made in America cabinets as the overseas makers can make solid wood options with good joints for the American market. Due to the wider variety of these factories you can get quality styles for way less money and much quicker lead times than the Amish shops can do. We believe each person should have the choice and look into all sides before coming to a purchase decision. You can't go wrong with today's cabinets selections from a good shop.
Ethridge Tennessee English Cabinet Shops
Since we are talking about this topic on a website about the Amish of Ethridge we will assume you have found a few Amish cabinet makers. Lawrenceburg just happens to have the Cabinets To Go Headquarters and main warehouse location. Their design studio and showroom is the best we have ever seen and they have the computer aided design and 3D software to show you exactly what your kitchen would look like. Their cabinets are made in Malaysia and Vietnam and feature looks that are more inline with today's kitchens. Anyone having hesitation in getting Amish made cabinets can go by the showroom and look around and be sure of their decision.
